Waste Management has an exciting opportunity for a qualified HR Generalist III to gain experience managing the human resources functions for a multi-state market area. The person in this role will have responsibilities from Central New Jersey, through the greater Philadelphia metro area and into South Delaware. The HR Generalist will partner with other HR Generalists and managers to support the director of disposal operations, and the finance and sales organizations within the market area to provide HR support to employees in NJ, PA & DE, approximately 450 to 900. The person in this role will receive valuable development opportunities leading to an HR Manager career path.
I. Job Summary
Serves as on-site Human Resources Generalist for one or more client groups. Performs highly complex Human Resources related duties at the professional level and carries out responsibilities in some or all of the following functional areas: employee relations, labor relations, recruitment, training, compliance, benefits and compensation administration. Administers HR policies and procedures. Collects and analyzes HR data, assists the HR Manager with tasks as assigned and makes recommendations to Management.
II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned.
Provides direct support to the Area HR Director in various areas such as employee relations, recruitment and staffing, training and development, benefits and compensation, policy and procedure compliance, organizational development, performance management, succession planning and other corporate initiatives.
Applies fundamental business, change management, and human resources concepts to establish and maintain effective working relationships with business partners.
Investigates help line calls and resolves employee conflicts and/or questions.
Interfaces with departmental and cross-functional peers and managers to provide consultative support, communicate procedures, and facilitate meetings and training programs.
Assists in resolution of employee problems including coaching, counseling and discipline.
Monitors for compliance to Federal, State, and local laws and company policies.
Develops and analyzes HR metrics, such as employee turnover reports.
Coordinates personnel transactions such as hires, promotions, transfers, performance reviews, and terminations
Prepares employee separation notices and related documentation, and conducts exit interviews to determine reasons behind separations.
Represents organization at personnel related hearings and investigations.
Conducts training on company policy issues, and other issues as they arise.
Counsels employees and other managers on various employee relation issues.
Maintains technical knowledge and a current awareness of new HR developments and techniques.
Manages employee relations in union and non-union environments
Analyzes year over year data of staffing and turnover.
Evaluates and recommends salaries within set forth parameters
Manages succession planning
Visits post collection sites such as transfer stations, MRF's and landfills within NJ, PA and DE.
Manages the union grievance process
Other duties as assigned.
III. Supervisory Responsibilities
This job has no supervisory duties, but may occasionally act as a team lead over 1-2 HR Coordinators.
The requirements listed below are representative of the qualifications necessary to perform the job.
A. Education and Experience
Education: Bachelor's Degree (accredited) in Human Resources, Business Administration or similar area of study, or in lieu of degree, High School Diploma or GED (accredited) and 4 years of relevant work experience.
Experience: 5 years of relevant HR experience covering employee relations, benefits and/or compensation (in addition to education requirement).
B. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations or Other Requirements
SHRM strongly preferred
Current valid drivers' license
C. Other Knowledge, Skills or Abilities
Computer skills including Microsoft Office, time and attendance and other human resource information systems (e.g., PeopleSoft).
Ability to interact and communicate at the director level
Ability to travel to transfer stations, MRF’s and landfills within the market area required
Ability to present and facilitate preferred
Ability to understand and interpret union contracts, collective bargaining agreements
