Waste Management Field Based Customer Service Representative in Sun Valley, California

I. Job Summary

This position is dedicated to transitioning and implementing waste, organics, manure and recycling services in the City of Los Angeles (LA) in the West Valley and South East Valley zones. Emphasis will be on conducting waste assessment audits, ongoing public education and communication with customers to ensure higher participation in recycling and organic programs.

Representatives filling this position will serve as a company representative in the City of LA West Valley and Southeast Valley zones. Waste Management’s LA Corp Representative will be the liaison between Waste Management’s commercial customers, multi-family dwellings and the City. Representative will interface with various internal departments within the company, including but not limited to, Operations, Accounting and Customer Service.

II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned.

Conducts site surveys and waste audits to determine trash, organics, manure and recycling service levels and making recommendations on size and location of bins. Fully understands the rate structure of the City of LA contract to assist customers with the decision-making process.

Possesses extensive knowledge and understanding of contract obligations, included but not limited to pricing, diversion, reporting and operations.

Ability to influence commercial customers by communicating the importance of obtaining the City of Los Angeles Franchise/Waste Management services.

Understands customer’s needs and provides appropriate marketing material and pricing plans, identifying customer needs and interests to determine the best sales strategy and identifying potential objections with plans to address during the site visit.

Matches Waste Management services with customer needs by demonstrating knowledge of customers, pricing and competition; effectively communicates pricing and service strategies; proactively engages other Waste Management business opportunities, referring internally as appropriate.

Educates commercial establishments and multi-family dwellers on the importance of recycling and all City, State, and Federal mandates.

Arranges for new services and conducting on-site training programs with customers.

Assists in the development and dissemination of public education and marketing pieces for WM’s programs.

Cultivates and improves community partnerships by attending and participating in public events, meetings and other programs on behalf of the company.

Identifies potential organizations and partners involved with food rescue and resource recovery.

Regular weekend and evening event work may be required.

A. Education and Experience

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree (accredited) or in lieu of degree, High School Diploma or GED (accredited) and 4 years of sales experience.
  • Experience: 1 year of relevant work experience in direct sales, cold calling, and phone based prospecting resulting in successfully obtaining customer appointments (in addition to education requirement).

This is a field-based position. This position is eligible to participate in sales compensation and recognition programs upon successful completion of sales orientation and/or training programs.

Internal requirements include 2 years of proven success in a non-exempt inside sales position.
