The District Manager Opportunity

WM is seeking a District Manager to oversee the day-to-day collection operations of our Hamilton District. As a District Manager, you will be supporting front-line operations and our fleet department with goals to establish and maintain performance/productivity metrics and cost management processes.

WM District Manager Duties

You will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of our Hamilton District and providing leadership to your employees. This will include selecting, coaching, training, evaluating and disciplining employees. There will also be opportunities to liaise with HR to resolve employee and labour relations issues

You will utilize your forward thinking in acknowledging that risk is necessary to meet growth targets. Ideally, you are a strong, out of the box thinker – this will be critical to success in this role!

From a financial perspective, you will be required to monitor budget and operating metrics while regularly analyzing procedures to improve performance. This involves participation in P&L reviews to ensure goals are being met, new process development and implementation for optimal equipment utilization and monitoring equipment maintenance, labour and material costs.

Safety is the cornerstone to our culture at WM. Your role as a DM will be to ensure you execute proactive strategies to ensure safety and compliance with WM and OSHA standards. It will be imperative to ensure thorough root cause investigations are conducted, followed by consistent retraining.

There is also a Sales element to this role! As the DM, you will work with our Area VP and Operations/Sales Directors to formulate short-term/long-term goals and action plans to grow your district. You will need to possess the ability to initiate growth objectives through close partnership with these teams to be successful. To ensure satisfaction of our current customers, we regularly interact with local city, municipal and county agencies; this gives us the opportunity to improve efficiency, renew contracts and negotiate new contracts. Your prioritization abilities allow you to function effectively in a high-pressure environment, with a clear sense of urgency about planning and work execution. Your innate communication skills will allow you to effectively partner with varying levels of management to achieve success.

Our Hamilton district operates under a unionized environment , so working knowledge of unionized environments is strongly preferred as you will be required to manage employee/labour relation issues and execute progressive discipline processes.

You have management experience in a similar work environment, with exposure preparing and managing budgets. Along with this, you will have experience implementing safety (OSHA) programs and equipment specifications.

Education & Experience

You have a Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent years of experience) and at least 3 years’ experience in a role with supervisory/management expectations and P&L responsibility. Ideally, those 3 years will be in a transportation, logistics, or solid waste operations environment.
